Jolie good show!
From Shia’s shenanigans to Angelina minding her own business, we look back, aghast, at a lively year in our toddling town

December 21, 2007

BY RICHARD ROEPER SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST

From the courtroom to the streets of the city, it was lights-camera-action in Chicago in 2007. Angelina Jolie proved she’s still the most “Wanted” star in the world, Shia LaBeouf became perhaps the first movie star ever to get into late-night trouble at a Walgreens, we found out the truth behind those “Casino” murders, and we quickly learned that “Rory’s First Kiss” involved neither a Rory nor a kiss — but it did include one scary-looking Joker.

And we saw perhaps the least convincing portrayal of a Chicago cop in motion picture history.

Let’s take a look back at the year in film — from movie-related news in the Chicago area to the best of what we saw on the big screen in 2007.

“Attention, customers, there’s no line at the cosmetics counter — hey, isn’t that the guy from ‘Transformers’?” After giving countless interviews in which he vowed not to follow the path of Lindsay and Britney et al., an apparently extra-”cheerful” Shia LaBeouf was arrested at the Walgreens on Michigan and Chicago at 2:30 a.m. on a Saturday night/Sunday morning. LaBeouf was in town filming “Eagle Eye” with Billy Bob Thornton, whose ex-wife was filming a movie of her own in Chicago earlier in the year. (More on that in a moment.)

Just think, if LaBeouf had returned to that Michigan Avenue Walgreens a week later, he could have purchased magazines with stories about his adventure at that same store. Or something like that.

You ain’t nuthin’ but a bad film: The biggest controversy at the Sundance Film Festival in 2007 centered on “Hounddog,” a Southern gothic tale with a scene involving child actress Dakota Fanning. There were calls for boycotts and even a criminal investigation. …

Live-action characters and computer-animated images combine in this story about a human who tries to transform some singing chipmunks into pop sensations. Tim Hill (”Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties̶ ;) directed. (88 minutes) Some rude humor. (PG)
AMERICAN GANGSTER: (B+) Superstars Denzel Washington (”Inside Man̶ ;) and, Russell Crowe (”3:10 to Yuma̶ ;) star as Frank Lucas and Richie Roberts, respectively, in this fact-based tale about a powerful drug lord in Harlem during the 1970s and the federal agent who relentlessly pursued him. Ridley Scott (”Black Hawk Down̶ ;) directed the crime epic that shows an unsettling universe in which police are more interested in payoffs than justice, the system is rigged against minorities and getting ahead means committing profitable crimes, not learning a trade or getting an education. (157 minutes) Strong violence, pervasive drug content, harsh four-letter profanity, nudity, sexual elements. (R)
ATONEMENT: (A-) Keira Knightley (the “Pirates of the Caribbean” trilogy) and James McAvoy (”The Last King of Scotland̶ ;) co-star in this rare cinematic accomplishment that lifts the hearts of viewers and also breaks them, often at the same time. The British drama chronicles the consequences that result when a 13-year-old girl charges the boyfriend of her older sister with a sexual assault. Joe Wright (”Pride & Prejudice̶ ;)

Big 10 Game-Fixing? The Las Vegas Facts!

December 19th, 2007 by lisa

Source: WebWire (press release) ()

The #1 cited sports betting expert on the recent Tim Donaghy NBA and Toledo college football game-fixing scandals, RJ Bell of Pregame.com, provides eye-popping info on the latest point shaving allegations.

Las Vegas, Nevada (12/19/07) – The sports world is abuzz with talk of Big 10 Official Stephen Pamon history bankruptcy, casino gambling, child abuse and allegations of sexual harassment.

Two games from 2007 have been cited: (Penn St/Purdue on 11/3/07; Ohio St./Illinois 11/10). Both games had disproportionate money bet on the teams that benefited from the objectionable calls in those games (Penn St and Illinois). “If a game is fixed, the benefiting team will be bet more heavily – and that was the case in both 2007 games in question” said RJ Bell of Pregame.com

Few realize the massive amounts of money bet on sports. A US Government report estimates that 360 BILLION dollars are bet worldwide per year on sports; Congressional Testimony states that 40 million Americans bet on football alone.

Fewer still realize how common point-shaving is: A University of Michigan survey on collegiate sports gambling concludes that more than 5 percent of male student-athletes provided inside information for gambling purposes, bet on a game in which they participated, or accepted money for performing poorly in a game; the survey also concluded than 45 percent of male collegiate football and basketball athletes admit to betting on sporting events, despite NCAA regulations prohibiting such activities

”Money plus opportunity results in corruption; it happens to Senators – why wouldn’t we EXPECT IT in officials, who make far less money? If 5% of college athletes are corrupt, that means hundreds of games a year are not legitimate!” said RJ Bell of Pregame.com

It’s startling to consider how easy it is to fix game. On average, 70% of teams end games within one touchdown of the Las Vegas spread …

The Seminole Tribe owns 105 acres around its Broward County reservation and casinos, has plenty of cash to acquire more and awaits approval of a landmark deal with the state to add high-stakes card games and slot machines.

But the tribe’s success is causing anxiety for some local governments, which worry the land will be taken off public rolls and converted into a federally protected trust — making it exempt from property taxes, local oversight and all building regulations.

“Around the country you’re seeing tribes expand their trust land to the point where they rule and control towns completely,” said Davie Vice Mayor Bryan Caletka.

He took notice of the tribe’s reach last year, when the Seminoles bought the 11-acre Stirling Mobile Home Park and evicted 150 residents, and when it petitioned to take 44 acres in Coconut Creek into trust. Although the tribe has made no attempt to turn Stirling into trust land, Caletka and other city officials they expect the Seminoles to do so.

UltimateBet Promises Million Dollar First Place Prize at 2008 Aruba Poker Classic

The popular online poker site today announced plans for its 7th annual land-based poker tournament in Aruba.

Miami, FL (PRWEB) December 16, 2007 — UltimateBet.com isn't resting on its laurels. Just two months after wrapping up the 2007 Aruba Poker Classic and garnering nonstop praise from the international poker community, the popular online poker site today announced plans for its 7th annual land-based poker tournament on the Caribbean island.

"We're heading back to Aruba for the biggest poker celebration of the decade," stated UltimateBet.com spokesperson George MacLean. "And we're bringing the largest first place prize in our history with us."

The 2008 Aruba Poker Classic will kick off on September 27th, 2008 and run through October 4th. For the 7th year in a row, the poker tournament will be held at the luxurious Radisson Aruba Resort and Casino.

UltimateBet is guaranteeing a first place prize of $1-million, a startling $200,000 more than what was won by Travis Rice, the poker player from Fort Worth, Texas who finished first in the 2006 Texas Hold'em tournament.

The popular weeklong island tournament gives online poker players the chance to celebrate their successes at the tables and on the beach with poker's best professionals. Matt Savage, one of the world's most respected poker tournament directors, will return to oversee the event. Savage made his Aruba debut at the 2006 event.

Past Aruba Poker Classic participants include Phil Hellmuth, Jennifer Tilly, Phil "The Unabomber" Laak, Annie Duke and Scott Ian from Anthrax. MacLean notes that several Hollywood and entertainment celebrities have already confirmed their intention to attend the 2008 Aruba Classic. Details on those celebrities will be announced next year.
